Black Hammer #1 – Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston (Dark Horse Comics)

I love a good premise for a story and this book certainly has that. A lot of super hero based books have a particular setup. Person somehow is imbued with powers. Person decides to use those powers for good, dons a suit of some sort and every issue from there on show us the challenges they face on a day to day basis. This book does away with that. Instead of being presented with a super powered team in their prime, facing down their enemies in an eternal struggle to prevail over evil, we’re introduced to a team that are 10 years out of date and are no longer active superheroes after a cataclysmic event which claimed the life of their comrade and has landed them in what can only be described as a form of purgatory. This debut issue is indeed a fascinating read and leaves you wanting the answer to a load of questions. The characters are really interesting and Lemire and Ormston have a wonderful way of depicting this worn down, broken team who were once responsible for protecting a world. I really look forward to seeing where this story moves in future and to seeing how these characters develop beyond this debut issue. … Drew Hamley
