Spat – Consumers Suck CD (Self Release)
A rare gem of a CD that for me ticks all necessary boxes, fast, loud, anarchic punk… intelligently crafted and excellently recorded and I hasten to add, by no way overproduced. The guitars, bass, drums and vocals are all thick and crunchy with lots of bite and plenty of overdrive. Spat’s handwritten press pack (how punk is that) states the band are a 4 piece punk band from Edinburgh. The artwork is all homemade and comes with a fold out A3 poster and lyric sheet, on the back of the CD it states “copying and distribution if this CD is strongly encouraged”. I’ve played in shitty HC punk bands for close to 10 years and not once have I come close to being this fucking cool, if you like the sound of raw beefy as fuck crusty oi punk with overdriven hooks and no bullshit then Spat are the band for you! There isn’t a bad tune on the 12 track album but if I had to pick out a few stand out tracks it’d be opener Stand Still, May ’68, Nuclear War and title track Consumers Suck. Spat state that they are heavily influenced by not only “hardcore and UK82 but melodic punk rock as well”. A seriously good record and quite possibly the best I’ve heard this year, fuckin’ love it! For fans of Discharge, The Exploited, The Varukers, Minor Threat and Cryptic Slaughter… you get the idea!
