Torche – Songs For Singles CD (Hydrahead)
Something of a stopgap release rather than a fully forged follow up to 2008’s incredible ‘Meanderthal’ album; Torche continue their mission to meld sonic sludgyness to pop sensibilities, and do so to a degree that few (if any) can match. Two minute blasts of twisted melodies; think The Ramones covering Guided by Voices. To label the band as metal seems disingenuous even though they tread the same path as more unconventional metal bands as Baroness. With little concern for traditional strong structure (possibly even disdain), there’s no choruses, middle eight or breakdown as such, Torche nevertheless are able to hold your attention in the way that many ‘progressive’ bands find impossible. True visionaries. Ian Pickens
