Doctor Who: Demon Quest: A Shard Of Ice
Doctor Who: Demon Quest: A Shard Of Ice – Starring Tom Baker, Richard Franklin, Susan Jameson, Samuel West, Jan Francis, Carole Boyd & Written by Paul Magrs – CD (AudioGo)
So far, ‘Demon Quest’ is shaping up to be a more than worthy follow-up to ‘Hornet’s Nest’, and it just keeps on getting better with each instalment. ‘A Shard Of Ice’, the third part, find the Doctor and Mike Yates travelling back to 1894, to find a children’s storyteller and future author, during a raging Winter storm after discovering their images locked in battle with some kind of abominable snowman in a book of fairy stories. Once there, they become embroiled in murder (and a little life energy draining mayhem), intrigue and deception, as the ‘Ice Queen’ and her life-long, trapped by a deal with the devil, servant Albert (the author), try to ensure that the only way the Doctor will leave the snowbound landscape is in the Queen’s tendrils. There’s an instant sense of familiarity and warmth that flows through me each and every time I hear Tom Baker as the Doctor, and here, as with the previous releases, he fully inhabits the character, leaving you with a sense that he never really left the show, and no matter what else he does, he’ll always be the Doctor. Always. If you haven’t already tuned into ‘Demon Quest’, it really is about time that you started playing catch up, after all, the nights are drawing in, and that space behind the sofa, the one that we all used to hide in when the Doctor confronted his enemies, is calling, slowly beckoning. Time for a return visit to the hiding places of old… Tim Mass Movement
