Factory, The – self-titled CD (Acetate/MVD)
The Factory pretty much ruled the sleazy underbelly of the US East Coast club scene in the mid-80s, but only recorded a handful of times, releasing only a few copies of each session on cassette to their fans. Thankfully, one of those fans was Rick Ballard, head honcho at Acetate Records, a label whose releases never fail to make me swoon. Musically, The Factory crawls through the dirty streets of rock ‘n’ roll swagger exemplified by The Joneses, New York Dolls, and Dead Boys—a heady mix of vintage rock and sneering punk, with an emphasis on making the listener shake his or her ass until the sun comes up. Vance Bockis’ amazing vocals lead the charge, and curiosity-seekers take note: Vance also spent time in both The Obsessed and Pentagram. Vintage finds like this are always worth it, and even more so when they feel more like a voyage into a fantastic future than a trip down memory lane. The Impaler
