Doctor Who: Demon Quest: The Relics Of Time

Doctor Who: Demon Quest: The Relics Of Time – Starring Tom Baker, Susan Jameson, Nigel Anthony and Richard Franklin – Written by Paul Magrs – CD (AudioGo)
Has it really been a year since the return of the Fourth Doctor? It certainly doesn’t feel like it’s been a year since he, along with Mike Yates and Mrs. Wibbsey, battled the Hornets and in true Doctor fashion, saved the day. Anyway, a year it must have been, and the opening chapter of Demon, Quest, the latest five part story arc, finds the Doctor back at Nest Cottage after twelve months travelling, only to be plunged straight into another adventure after Mrs. Wibbsey manages to inadvertently trade the Tardis’ Spacial Geometer (which was casually left lying around whilst the Doctor “repaired” and “overhauled” the Tardis after returning from his jaunt here, there and everywhere) at the local Church Bizarre, and in exchange is left with a series of items, or clues that seem to have changed the time line, the first of which, a picture of, and a tile from an ancient Celtic Mosaic of the Doctor, prompts immediate action on his part, and both he and his faithful housekeeper journey back to the first century Britain in order to get to the bottom of this particularly rum turn of events. Once there, they find themselves caught up in tribal warfare, tasked with assassinating a “wizard” and his monster in order to restore peace. Of course, this being Doctor Who, things are never exactly what they seem, and history as we know it can only be saved by Wibbsey and our trusty Timelord. Paul Magrs has, once again, delivered a top notch story that allows Tom Baker to fully embrace his eccentricity and the role for which he always been known, The Doctor, the slightly strange, almost always bizarre saviour of the Universe, reigned in and kept in check by Susan Jameson’s long suffering Mrs. Wibbsey. ‘The Relics Of Time’ is the perfect antidote to the reality nonsense that plague the airwaves on Saturdays, and should be taken in vast doses in order to prevent the fiendish machinations of Cowell and his “celebrity” minions and their arch-rivals, the dancing automatons. This is the kind of entertainment that Saturdays were invented for, good old fashioned adventure stories and yarns that are filled to bursting with characters who you’ll remember for the next twenty years, not that shameful rehashed and reinvented Hughie Green dross that Cowell tries to force feed you. This is what you want, need and deserve. Embrace it and enjoy it. Roll on part two; I can’t wait to find out what happens next… Tim Mass Movement
