Harvestman – Trinity CD (Neurot Recordings)
Being a side project of Neurosis guitarist Steve Von Till, there will be little question as to the quality of anything this gentleman puts out but that isn’t to say this will be to everyone’s taste. If we divide Neurosis output into three unrealistic categories of punk, the heavy shit and the more moody stuff, Trinity sits more comfortably in the latter grouping. Unfortunate for me as that’s my least favourite era. While Trinity might be lean into that corner, it isn’t quite the same beast, forgoing any vocalizing to concentrate on a very laid back, sublime set of acoustic, experimental electric and keyboard led ‘pieces’, segueing one into the other in a rather relaxed fashion. The Mogwai-isms are strong, for want of a better example, and quite how a track which is mild warbling feedback can be called March to Loch Barren, but then one man’s art, etc. Trinity is a very relaxing, pleasant record, with some latter Neurosian moments, and not entirely unchallenging, there is a tangible ‘vibe’, you’d have to listen to it to choose your interpretation of that, and I recommend that you do. Though for Saturday night with the boys/girls, I’d stick with Back In Black. Chest Rockwell
