Bootscraper - Country and Eastern
Bootscraper – Country and Eastern CD (TNS Records)
Leeds “aggro folk” mob – that’s what the press sheet says – roll out their debut album on the hardest working label in the UK and it’s a peculiar listen to be honest with you. The scrapers of boots throw all manner of rootsy sounds in to their wacky melting pot. There’s banjos, accordions, violins, kitchen sinks … If you want reference points, that Gogol Bordello have a lot to answer for and they at times remind me of long forgotten indie obscurios The Pale. Chuck in some alt country, a bit of bluesy shenanigans, some pirate sea shanties and a vocalist that comes across as Tom Waits if he were to ever shake off his sore throat and you have a band that you could quite possibly come across playing outside a caravan deep in the Balkans … or Leeds.
