Thunder from Fenris

Thunder from Fenris – Nick Kyme - Performed by Toby Longworth – CD (Black Library) www.blacklibrary.com
Sometimes, just sometimes, you’ll stumble across a thing, whether it be a book, a film, an album, which up until the point of discovery, you were completely unaware of, a thing that immediately becomes incredibly important to you. Something that. For want of a better descriptive phrase, becomes central to your daily life, and could end up, if only slightly, changing your existence for the better, and ‘Thunder From Fenris’ is one of those releases. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not going to alter the way I see the world, or change me in any way, but having spent an afternoon listening to it, I promise you this, I will definitely read anything and everything that I can that contains the words ‘Warhammer 40,000’ or ‘Space Wolves’, and time and finances permitting (the older you get kids, the less you seem to have of both) I’ll make it my mission to start a ‘Warhammer 40,000’ campaign. Somehow, some way, I’ll do it. See, ‘Thunder From Fenris’ is a an adrenaline fuelled rollercoaster ride from beginning to end that’s equal parts Viking mythology, Science Fiction epic and raging war story, that includes werewolves, zombies, chaos beasts, undead-viruses and a gloriously unhealthy amount of gore soaked and infused combat. The story taps both the fantasy and science fiction genre’s, combing both to maximum effect, delivering a tale that’s over before you have time to fully digest every facet of the story, a story that demands (and rewards) multiple listens. I honestly thought, before I pressed play, that I’d end up drowning in Warhammer centric plots that would confuse and alienate not only me, but the average listener, but Toby Longworth’s brilliant performance and Nick Kyme’s story bring the characters into fully fleshed out existence, in an easily accessible tale that’ll make converts out of newcomers and put a smile on the faces of the faithful. I mean, come on, Vikings armed with a huge variety of laser based weapons who ride giant cybernetically enhanced wolves over a planet ravaged by a chaos born space plague, dispatching zombies in a quest to find one of their own who’s succumbed to a genetic form of lycanthropy – how can you not dig that? It’s the stuff that dreams are made of…Well, mine anyway…. Tim Mass Movement
