Of Darkness and Light – Paul Kane
Of Darkness and Light – Paul Kane (Thunderstorm Books)
Lee Masterton is afraid of the dark. Like most kids he finds the mysterious world without light to be full of terror. Unfortunately he never quite grows out of his fear. He’s a grown man living with his parents and his dad seems to hate his guts. His dole’s about to run out and his girlfriend/love of his life has dumped him. Instead of wallowing in self-pity (well, maybe a little) he gets a job. As a night watchman. What a great way to conquer a phobia, you might say. It’s not, I assure you. Instead of a new found confidence Lee discovers it’s the light he should have been scared of the whole time.
This story is great! The characters are well-developed, even Lee’s asshole father. Paul Kane’s use of description to give his tale a creepy, tense atmosphere is superb and the juxtaposition of light/dark and good/evil is really refreshing. Of Darkness and Light was one of my favorite reads of 2009!
