Back from the dead. At least that’s the feeling ‘Death Is My Only Friend’ gives me. After the final release on Epitaph, ‘Death For Life’, things cooled down tremendously. Live album ‘Death Alive’ did nothing to really change that feeling. Through Serjikal in the US and I Scream in Europe this highly original band is trying to set things right. Although I really love this album personally, die-hard DSB followers might be put off. The main reason being that the typical raw hardcore edge this band had has been thrown overboard. ‘Death Is My Only Friend’ is more of a rock album. It’s amazing however, how Efrem’s voice gained such a prominent place. That fellow can sing, scream, growl… whatever a song asks for. He’s the strongest point of this band by far. Musically it’s good catchy punkrock that’ll lighten your day. Even if death is your only friend. Martijn Welzen
