Exeter - Grey Noise/White Lies CD (Engineer)
Exeter are a self proclaimed space rock/indie 4 piece from Austin, Texas and as it states on the overview that came with this CD, they are four years, 30 songs and a hundred shows into its mission of leaving Earth without ever leaving the ground. In all honesty though, after a couple of listens to the disc…I began wishing this mission would hurry up and they would leave already!!
I don’t want to sound too harsh as the album isn’t all bad, but there are a lot more bands out there who play this style of music a lot better.
The opening tracks are by the numbers, although The Romantic does have a more anthem like, almost poppy chorus. The bass line chugs along, and the drums are quite aggressive throughout. The Chorus builds up and then bursts into the song making this song the standout track of the album.
They do create some blissful, spacey soundscapes like on Red Dress and even more so the title track Grey Noise, White Lies. This instrumental number could very well be a Pelican song as it builds and builds and builds till an epic finalé.
The rest of the album just passes you by until the end track, Planet X. This track is again quite a good, epic sounding song which is quite heavy at times and ultimately pretty pleasing. It would though have sounded much better though, like most of the other songs, without any vocals.
This isn’t an awful album but neither is a standout one. If you want more for your cold, hard cash then try bands like Hum or Elliot…if you already have all their stuff, then get this. Diccy P
