Sergeant – self-titled

Sergeant – self-titled CD (Shy Recordings/Little Press)
My first thought: if the packaging is any indication, this will be a tasty little record. Great cover. Cool logo. Interesting band name. The band is from Scotland, specifically (according to their press sheet) ‘the middle of nowhere’… another good sign. So I listened to the disc. Then I listened to it again. I’m hooked, and no mistake. Sergeant has taken the early 90s jangly-pop/shoegaze sound and updated it for a new generation. Think: Charlatans, The Stone Roses, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Verve, Kula Shaker. Bright, poppy, catchy (and then some). The production is clean and crisp. The songs could all be hit singles on alternative radio. Sergeant has the potential to blow up into massive arena stars, and they actually deserve it. The Impaler
