Dope Body – Natural History CD (Facedown)
So it appears that this Baltimore collective don’t have any particular musical raison d’etre outside of free form self expression, existing in an eclectic music scene and talking of having fun and making random noises. Listening to Natural History, that makes sense, and also explains the rather wide strokes contained within. It kicks off with a rather good but out of place God Machine-like dirge, then continues through a mishmash of lively post-Clash alt/noise rock, taking in plenty of Fugazi, Shellac and Mosely era Faith No More. Like a lighter Harvey Milk and sounding more experimental than intentional, it’s a stylistic hit and miss affair, though there’s likely a sizeable hipster audience out there ready to worship every note. Dope Body is pretty fun, and if they could tighten up the sound and lose the familiar filler, they could be on to something genuinely fresh and new. Chest Rockwell
