It was inevitable. Sooner or later, Magnus Greel was going to appear in Doctor Who again, and the events that the Doctor and “Weng Chiang” discuss in their Victorian London encounter, the shared future history, the Peking Homunculus, the advent of World War IV and the siege of Reykjavik, would finally be explored. ‘The Butcher Of Brisbane’, transports the Fifth Doctor and his companions to Earth in the Fifty First century where Greel’s experiments in time travel using the Zygma beam are being conducted in secret, human test subjects being used to try and stabilise the work conducted by Greels associate, Dr Findecker. Caught in the beam, Turlough and Nyssa are transported to Earth, and the Doctor and Tegan desperate to find them, trace the beam, only to arrive three years after Nyssa and Turlough. But rather than sit on the sidelines, Nyssa and Turlough have spent three years investigating Greel and gaining his trust, and as the Doctor and Tegan arrive, are preparing to expose him for the monster he is before his political ambition leads to whole scale death and destruction, but can the Doctor allow Greel to be caught and punished in the future, his future, after defeating him and watching him die in the past? Does the Doctor sacrifice the past to save the future, and if he does, will there be a future to save? Marc Platt’s prequel to ‘The Talons Of Weng Chiang’ is a superb drama, tightly plotted and expertly executed, answering all the questions posed in Greel’s first appearance, whilst delivering an incredible story where the plot lines and threads weave in and out of each other before combining for the finale. Breathtaking adventure at its absolute finest… Tim Mass Movement
