Have you ever had one of those moments when you discover something wonderful? When you stumble across something that you immediately wish had always been a part of your life? Well folks, that’s how I feel about ‘The Scarifyers’, the duo of past pension age, nineteen thirties secret service investigators from MI13 who save Great Britain and the World ( Queen and Country first old bean, everything else second) from all manner of hideous monsters, supernatural beasts and ancient multi-tentacled “gods” from beyond the stars. Having arrived at the party a little late, and not the fashionably late arrival, but that kind of late arrival when everything is already in full swing and proceeding jolly well thank-you, I had a lot of catching up to do (‘The Horror Of Loch Ness’ is the seventh Scarifyers adventure), and thanks to the smashing folks at Cosmic Hobo, I spent an absolutely smashing day immersed in the hazardous endeavours of the late Inspector Lionheart (Nicholas Courtney), his replacement Harry Crow (David Warner) and MI13 stalwart, Professor Edward Dunning (Terry Molloy). This time, our intrepid investigators are dispatched to Loch Ness to find out what happened to the recently disappeared Malcolm Campbell and his boat, Bluebird, who both vanished without a trace into a mysterious bank of fog whilst conducting top secret speed trials. With the aid of their sometimes companion, Aleister Crowley (who damn near, as always, steals the show thanks to David Benson’s hilarious and astonishing portrayal of The Great Satan), they stumble across a web of supernatural intrigue stretches half a million years into the past, involving demons, Lovecraftian Elder Gods, covens, devil worshippers, witches, old adversaries and Nessie hunters. ‘The Horror Of Loch Ness’ is a laugh out loud funny, thrilling story that riffs on, and draws inspiration from, film (Jaws, Back To The Future and Night Of The Demon), television (The Brain Of Morbius – made all the more delicious by allowing Philip Madoc to lovingly pastiche and “incorporate’ the role of Solon into his final performance as Doctor Pippin) and literature (Lovecraft), yet remains unique, reinventing the popular radio and pulp productions of the nineteen thirties for the twenty first century. Bloody brilliant!!!! Tim Mass Movement
