We all know about this metal album or that metal album being labelled as the ‘soundtrack to the end of the world’, which always leaves the question, what are we supposed to go nuts about after the apocalypse? Providing, of course, there’ll be people listening to music and that there’ll be equipment to play it on, that is. What sort of music will we be playing in the event we have to leave Earth or that it ends up a scorched, near lifeless hell? In the event of either, I don’t think Europe’s ‘Final Countdown’ is going to take us far, but ‘Wish Upon A Black Star’ is the rock infused dance album of choice for a road trip, when we don’t actually need roads. Celldweller, being multi-instrumentalist Klayton, created a pressing record, that delivers hope and energy and makes you want to look ahead; into the black abyss of space. This album, by the Detroit based act, has been in development since 2004 and this exeptionally long gestation period has allowed the album to reach the level maturity that it revels in. What’s also kind of interesting is that eight of the songs have been released before as two-song chapters over a three year time-span. Industrial, dance, trance, nu metal and unexpected slabs of mystery meat make ‘Wish Upon…’ a radioactive, yet tasty, record. I wish it was December 21st, the date when the planet (according to the Mayan long count calendar) will turn in to a flaming ball of mud, and we’re dancing to the demise with the sweet sounds of ‘Wish Upon A Black Star’.
