We’ll Go Machete – Six Plus Ten

We’ll Go Machete – Six Plus Ten CD (Stressed Sumo)
‘Six Plus Ten’ is a reissued compilation of We’ll Go Machete’s self-titled debut EP from 2009 and its initial full-length, ‘Strong Drunk Hands’, from 2011. Both were originally self-released, so partnering with Stressed Sumo Records – run by Therapy?’s Neil Cooper and former Stressed Records mastermind Phil Rhodes – couldn’t have been a difficult decision for the band to make in an effort to spread its music to the masses. Hailing from Austin, Texas, We’ll Go Machete is a breath of fresh air in the current musical landscape – a post-post-hardcore band that seamlessly moves from the type of passionate, dissonant wall-of-guitars sound introduced by acts like Quicksand and Texas Is The Reason at the nadir of the NYHC movement to a more boisterous and dynamic sound smothered in Steve Albini’s fingerprints. Even with these obvious influences, We’ll Go Machete maintain a unique identity throughout. The drums, stylistically and sonically, are as organic and warm as those on any number of classic rock records. The vocals – while definitely at least somewhat patterned after the styles of Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, et al), Chris Galas (Snapcase), and Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, et al) – seem more organic too, less processed and more vulnerable than those of any of the band’s east coast progenitors. There are moments, too, when other, less obvious, influences shine through – both in the songwriting and in the execution – setting We’ll Go Machete apart as a band all its own rather than as a part of any past or present scene. The end result here is sixteen songs of pure Manna for devotees of guitar-based music, sure to ease the suffering and soothe the souls – if not necessarily the nerves – of its listeners.
