Doctor Who: Trail Of The White Worm – Starring Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Geoffrey Beevers, Michael Cochrane, Rachel Stirling & Written by Alan Barnes – CD / Download (Big Finish Productions – www.bigfinish.com)
When it comes to collecting enemies, in his time, The Doctor has acquired more than a few, but in all his travels, adventures and battles, there’s only ever been one true nemesis, his Moriarty, and it was only a matter of time until the biggest of the big guns, The Master, returned to face the Fourth Doctor once more. But, if you’re going to use the Whoniverses version of a nuclear bomb, you’ve got to use it wisely and ensure that at no point is the danger underestimated or overwhelmed by the story, but at the same time the story has to drag the listener in and completely immerse them from start to finish, which is exactly what ‘Trail Of The White Worm’ does. What at first seems to be a tale about a missing person, taken or so the locals believe by a beast (the White Worm) of legend, soon becomes something much more sinister, as the local legend is revealed to have more fact than fiction, a fact born of extraterrestrial origin that the Master is determined to exploit no matter the cost, as his nefarious machinations slowly begin to coalesce, opening a celestial doorway destined to bring doom and destruction, and the only thing that stands between him and success, is, as always, The Doctor. ‘Trail Of The White Worm’ is the opening salvo in a two part story that pits the age old enemies against each other and Baker and Beevers, as The Doctor and The Master respectively, are on fine form, capturing their audience, creating a genuine sense of suspense and drama that leaves you begging for the second part, feverishly wondering what’s going to in the final half. A Masterful story that’s monstrously good fun… Tim Mass Movement
