Mellow Bravo – S/T CD (Small Stone Records)
I wish bands would put a little bit more thought into their name and packaging because if this wasn’t on Small Stone I probably wouldn’t have looked at it twice; which is a shame as this is quite an impressive debut from this Boston troupe. Eleven eclectic tracks which fuse classic rock with some interesting modern dynamics, think Queens of the Stone Age/Black Mountain with a few slower smoochers such as ‘When I’m In Pain’ which reminds me of Sam Brown’s ‘Stop’ for some bizarre reason. ‘Shake Shake Shake’ stands out for me with a Celtic refrain which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Thin Lizzy album.
