The Cheek of Her – Passionate Shit EP CD (Independent)
I was intrigued by the description of The Cheek of Her on the press release that accompanied The Cheek of Her’s debut EP. Namedropping such influences as The Yeah, Yeah Yeahs and No Doubt got me all excited! After the first two tracks, I was set up to be a little disappointed; lyrically they were a little repetitive and, I hate to say it, dull. However, I listened a bit more, and a bit more….and a bit more…After three playthroughs, I realised that I was a little bit hooked! Don’t get me wrong, this is a slow burner; it doesn’t punch you in the face on the first play, but majorly catchy melodies and some very sexy vocals eventually lure you in. THOH’s influences too are a lot more developed than mentioned – there’s a hint of Beth Ditto and quite a lot of Dolores O’Riordan (The Cranberries,) sneaking through too. I can imagine this would be a great EP to hear performed live, with THOH’s full band, though points are won with me by pressing the EP on a CD that looks like a vinyl. That’s very cool. Stand out tracks are ‘Lies’ and ‘Mended’. Ah hell, eventually it’s all good. Tom W
