Having gotten a preview of Above Them’s music after divining the all-powerful portal known as ‘You-Tube’, I was expecting ‘Are We A Danger To Ourselves’ to be a slice of ‘NewFoundGlory’ meets ‘Against Me!”; bouncy, chorus-driven post-hardcore/punk-rock, the likes of which I had heard many, many times before. I’ve been left pleasantly surprised. Yes, there are similarities in style and influences to bands like ‘Against Me!’ but where Above Them stand out are in their delivery, which is more akin to early Foo Fighters or Biffy Clyro. Tight, melodic and varied guitars and excellent vocals mean that Are We a Danger to Ourselves? manages at once to be passionate, fresh and refined. Look out for the tracks ‘A New Year’ and the album’s title track, ‘Are We A Danger To Ourselves?’…they’ll get ya. Tom W
