Malokai – Heart Beats CD (Nameless/ Faceless)
I’ll start with a confession, I feel totally underqualified to review this 7 tracker! I’m not sure what the music genre is, I see band names like All Time Low and You Me At Six all the time, and I imagine this band is inspired by suchlike but I haven’t a clue what the style is, then again does it matter? Confession out of the way, let’s have a look at what we got. Starting off with a beating heart sound effect, this flows smoothly into the first tune and sets the ball rolling with some really well produced and played melodic music, with a slight metal edge in the guitars – when I saw metal I mean My Chemical Romance rather than Motorhead but I think you kids are in tune with what I mean. At first I was reminded of New Found Glory albeit a watered down version. I am loathe to use the word punk here as to be honest it is so slick and the vocals sickly sweet, it’s hard to spot the punk anywhere. For me things took a turn for the worse with a cover of “Price Tag” which I believe to be a pop song by someone called Jessie J. Horrible! So there you go, I don’t think this release was made with grumpy old men in mind. But hey, if well produced pop is your thing then give these guys a listen as all the ingredients are there.
