Hemendex – Reset 2 CD (Geenger Records)
It’s always neat to hear tunes from places no instantly considered to be hot beds of aural activity, so this label (and band) were of particular interest being based in Croatia. From the cover, I expected some angular Math Rock mavericks, but in fact Hemendex practice a pulsating Electro sound punctuated with a New Wave accessibility. There’s definitely a Meat Beat Manifesto influence on all the tracks, be it the leading ‘Reset This Place’ that incorporates New Order-esque Pop leanings while both ‘Microscope’ and especially ‘Milk With Satan’ add a harder Front 242/ Ministry ‘Twitch’-era Electro Industrialism to proceedings. Production is predictably pumping and Hi-tech edged. It’s no surprise these guys have shared a stage with the exceptional Young Gods and, personally, that slightly harder sound would benefit Hemendex greatly. Steve Scanner
