I’m sure that someone famous once said that if you wanted to end something spectacularly, you should go out with a bang, and as the Eighth Doctor and Mary Shelley’s adventures together are apparently (fingers crossed, let there be more, let there be more, let there be more) coming to an end, it’s only fitting that they go out the aforementioned bang, and bangs don’t get much bigger than the explosive events that the Doctor and Mary are thrust into in ‘Army Of Death’. Unless we’re talking about the formation of Universes, in which case they’re bound to be infinitely bigger, as it signals the onset of cosmic and celestial birth. But, believe me ‘Army Of Death’ packs a heck of a wallop. Warring cities, skeletal armies causing widespread death and destruction, science that seems more like black magic and necromantic magic that’s actually science are bound tightly into a tale of political intrigue where no-one is quite what they seem to be as they stumble through a web of lies fuelled by rumour and speculation, and guess who just happens to be right in the middle of the chaos, blindly struggling to find a way out and save everyone? That’s right folks, it’s The Doctor and Mary. If it really is the end of the road for our hero’s adventures together, then thanks to writer Jason Arnopp, they’re going out on a high, I just wish that the high could last a little longer, you know, like another trio of adventures longer. Oh well, all good things must come to an end I suppose, although for the life of me, I don’t understand why they should have to end, but if end they must, then ‘Army Of Death’ is a perfect end point. To quote another famous gent, a beach hut and end of promenade institution whose love of sausages is outweighed only by his pathological hatred of the police and crocodiles, “That’s the way to do it”… Tim Mass Movement
