As I Lay Dying – Decas CD (Metal Blade)
As I Lay Dying is about the same age as my oldest daughter, ten years, but are her polar opposite, as she gets more beautiful every single day, As I Lay Dying don’t. Okay, it’s disclaimer time, as the band, with ultra charismatic frontman Tim Lambesis leading them, will always be better than most of the modern metal bands, even on a bad-hair day and I am aware that I’m about to crap on their birthday cake, but I can’t take ‘Decas’ too seriously. It has a few new songs, a few covers, one of which, Slayer’s ‘War Ensemble’, made me dislocate my shoulder again, and another, Judas Priest’s ‘Electric Eye’ reminded me of Austrian Death Machine, for obvious reasons. There are also some remixes, of which ‘The Blinding of False Light’ by Innerpartysystem isn’t that bad either. A nice addition for the As I Lay Dying addict, but personally I’d love the band to kick it into high gear again like they did on ‘Shadows Are Security’ (2005). You just expect more from your metal-gods… Martijn Welzen
