Gnaw Their Tongues – Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus CD (Crucial Blast)
If you asked someone to name some music that’s scary, they might come up with the score from Psycho, Jaws or any other horror film in a long list. After listening to this album, I don’t think that there’s ever been a single person out there making more genuinely terrifying music than Gnaw Their Tongues. If there was ever an album that soundtracked being chased through a misty forest by an axe wielding maniac with a blood covered hard-on, then this would be it. Distilling clanging and grinding industrial, black metal, warped classical strings, booming percussion and samples of demonic possession and murder down into a rancid stew, if this album doesn’t make you shit your pants, then you must be an axe wielding maniac chasing people through a misty forest with a bloody hard-on. Taking the pure abrasiveness and sheer noise of previous albums and making it even more devastating by better utilising eerie strings and percussion, Per Flagellum… is the soundtrack to your worst nightmare. If you want to know what it feels like to be in hell, sit down at your place of work and listen to this album on repeat. But don’t blame me if you have the sudden urge to mutilate and dismember everyone around you. This album is horrifying sonic terrorism at it’s very best. Gareth Moule
