This 21st century update of the classic 1970s animation where a lone cyborg hero fought an opposing robot army trying to conquer Earth, is a typical remake and stays true to the original to some extent, although a darker take is implemented as this time Casshern fights his foes all the while unaware that it was he himself who caused the end of the world. The animation style is definitely unique, creatively approached with a retro edge to make an eye-catching and different look to the usual anime fair, but then this is a series which with such quality in its history it was only ever going to show it’s pedigree when it can and it does so here in abundance. It’s beautiful to look at, the characters are engaging, the animation is vivid and detailed, everything is set to maximum level and I’m hooked. Not for every fan of anime as obviously the future dystopian world can be a bit bleak, but if you enjoy robots and wastelands then pick this up as it’s essential. ALEX
