It’s time for Turlough to take centre stage as his past finally begins to catch up with him in ‘Kiss Of Death’. Although the Whovians amongst us are aware of Turloughs past (his exile to Earth from Trion, his home planet, following a civil war) thanks to ‘Planet Of Fire’, ‘Kiss Of Death’ helps round out his character, and fits neatly into Who’s continuity by ensuring that whilst Nyssa and Tegan (who had already left the Tardis by ‘Planet Of Fire’) become aware of his history, the Doctor remains blissfully ignorant of his companions origin and banishment. Continuity preserved and canonicity expanded? Yes folks, it’s another rollercoaster ride of an adventure with The Doctor and his companions, that starts, as so many things do, innocently enough, with the four members of the Tardis crew taking a well earned break on Vektris. After finally venturing out of the Tardis, Turlough bumps into an old face from his past, which in turn leads to him being kidnapped by mercenaries who whisk him off to an ice moon, delivering him to their benefactor, who in turn needs Turlough so that he can find a long hidden treasure, but not if The Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan have anything to do with it, as the three of them set off in pursuit of the kidnappers in order to rescue Turlough. A rescue attempt that might just be doomed to failure if the thing living in the ice (that makes up the world where Turlough has been taken) has anything to do with it. With twists and turns aplenty, ‘Kiss Of Death’ hits all the high points of Doctor Who and manages to avoid all the pitfalls, delivering one heck of a story while finally allowing a much neglected, crucial character to take centre stage. It’s great to see Turlough take the lead at last… Tim Mass Movement
