The Winchester Club – Negative Liberty CD (Exile on Mainstream)
Five brooding Post-rock instrumentals from the London based quintet, and from the subtle opening chimes to the haunting downbeat finale this had me hooked. The compositions ebb and flow, steadily building layer upon layer to a crescendo of distortion before washing gently away, in very much a similar vein to the mighty Mogwai. Subtly placed vocal samples reinforce that comparison, and although it would do The Winchester Club a great disservice to portray them as copyists, it’s impossible to deny the influence of the Scots sonic landscapers on this release. Negative Liberty is an album that commands your attention and rewards you for your efforts. Ian Pickens
