Bear – Abstractions 20 Download (Acuity)
Within the realm of what can be labelled ‘tech metal’ there’s quite a few options for a band. You can play insanely difficult music, without too many angry parts, like Tesseract, or you can take things totally up the violent metalcore alley, in the vein of Converge. What Bears, from Belgium do, is not all that becoming to be honest. Bones get shattered and skulls get crushed by aggressive vocals and crazy twists. They sort of follow the Converge school of charm. However, whilst I do love Converge, I can’t really seem to follow where Bear is taking me. I’m dropped in a hostile environment without a map or weapon to defend myself. I’m torn to pieces in 20 seconds flat and will never know what hit me, not even in the afterlife. I’m all up for crazy music, but it really does need a sense of direction. Martijn Welzen
