Teen-Rebel Dopefiends – s/t CDEP (Not Shy Of The DIY)
The first thing that hits you about this CDEP is the very neat, simplistic cut ‘n’ paste DIY sleeve and vinyl-print CD. Both are very cool touches; the sleeve in particular epitomising the inventiveness in the DIY Punk scene. The band is a four-piece from Grimsby, UK and offer up six songs with an immediate early Against Me! Feel, but laced with a distinctly more Rock ‘n’ Roll approach. Highlights include the gravel-vocalled declaration that is ‘Problems’, ‘Whipping Boy’ that evokes the urgent twisted cool of Shitty Limits and ‘Marina’ that closes proceedings in epic, anthemic style while ‘Mr. Official’ blatantly lifts a Clash riff and makes it its own. As a bonus, there are five unlisted acoustic versions of tracks from the EP, with ‘Problems’ once again standing out. Very satisfying stuff that displays a diverse and original sound but one that is intrinsically Punk Rock. Recommended. Steve Scanner
