Desert Storm – Forked Tongues CD (Buried In Smoke Records)
Man these guys have a serious hard-on for Southern style metal/rock. Opening track ‘Cosmic Drips’ could have graced any of the past few Clutch albums. In fact it’s uncanny; if you close your eyes you would honestly believe you were listening to Brother Neil and the boys. The Clutch comparison stretches even further on ‘Ol Town’ and then just when you think you’ve pinned down Desert Strom as some sort of Clutch tribute act, they switch track and start dishing out some serious Down-esque riffing on the aptly titled ‘South We Roll’. ‘Smokes ‘N’ Liquor’ unleashes some sweet-assed, down and dirty RnR before the band shift gears back into Down mode, even down to the obligatory acoustic track ‘Connected’ – a track very much in the vein of ‘Where I’m Going’. Desert Storm are a band that’s not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves, but are more than capable of backing it up with some muscular musicianship, solid catchy riffs and strong vocals.
